About Me

I graduated at the British Academy of Rolfing™ Structural Integration in January 2017 and I practice in North London (Bethnal Green and Muswell Hill).

I have been a medical doctor since 2004, mostly working in paediatrics. A need for a richer human relationship with my patients, and questions about my own health, have brought me to explore what health really means to me and how I can achieve and maintain it.

Rolfing™ was part of this exploration: undergoing the ten Rolfing ™ sessions, as a client myself, was a deeply transformative process. Freedom from pain, tension and holding patterns allowed me to cope better with life challenges, be well, have energy, feel nourished, loved and creative.

Later, studying Rolfing™ Structural Integration enabled me to integrate my knowledge and skills into a more holistic understanding of health that goes beyond the absence of pain and other symptoms.

Special Interests: having been a paediatrician for many years, I am particularly interested in Rolfing™ for children and I am planning my future Rolfing™ studies in this direction.

About Me

I trained first as a dancer but soon discovered I enjoyed the rehearsals more than the performance. This led me to a fascination with the felt sense of the body moving and to the world of yoga. I have been teaching yoga for over 20 years and am the director of Yoga Junction studio in London and the author several books. I discovered Rolfing through yoga (Ida Rolf did yoga too!) as a student of Giovanni Felicioni. Rolfing was a revelation to me, being the strongest, most effective and permanently transforming bodywork I have ever encountered. My own yoga practice transformed and developed as I experienced the 10 sessions myself and then even more as I undertook the Rolfing training. In both yoga and Rolfing I am interested in supporting the autonomy of the client to find out what works well for them, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I like to work with all kinds of people and enjoy using touch and movement to explore and develop an innate sense of self. I have 4 children and now live in Tiverton, Devon with my partner (Yoga teacher Nigel Jones), 3 tortoises, 2 horses and a cat, but travel to London twice a month to teach Yoga and to do Rolfing.

Rolfing Practices
London, Tunbridge Wells/Kent

About Me

I graduated at the British Academy of Rolfing™ Structural Integration in January 2017 and I practice in London (St John’s Wood) and Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

In 2010 I began attending extended silent meditation retreats. I discovered the importance of embodiment and how, despite also practising Yoga, it often proved difficult to access and be with certain areas and possibilities within the body. Mindfulness is now a ubiquitous term in our culture, yet for many the ability to be truly present is often compromised by deep invested patterns of holding in the body.

I was fortunate to be introduced to a Rolfer by a meditation teacher. Rolfing™ gradually assisted me to challenge and change long-standing habits of bad posture, chronic pain and long-held emotional patterns of muscle tension in the body. These were the cumulative effects of historical trauma, injury, surgery and body misuse. However strong my intentions were to become more embodied, I now realise it was only made possible through transformative touch and the re-educational nature of the therapeutic Rolfing™series.

Rolfing™ proved so rewarding and fascinating, that I decided to undertake the Rolfing™ training. Initially I studied some courses at the London College of Massage to gain experience of bodywork in a therapeutic environment. I then undertook the full training with BARSI (British Academy of Rolfing™ and Structural Integration)

I am intrigued by how our sense of verticality and presence, or lack of, is intrinsically linked to the current context and narrative of our lives. A baby never just gets up and walks. It is a journey towards verticality and one which, as adults, we often assume is over and somehow fixed. Through enquiry, touch and movement, it is possible to understand our patterns, let go of habitual tension and rediscover a sense of wellness and engagement with life in the only place we ever can, our bodies.

Rolfing for Arthritic Hip Joints by Keith Graham

Certified Advanced Rolfer & Rolf Movement practitioner, Keith Graham, shares this interesting case study where he has helped a woman with arthritis.

Keith reports:

Phyllis first came to me in early 2014 for help with her arthritic hip pain, her main goal being to avoid the hip surgery that her medical consultant was recommending.

I initially took Phyllis through the first six sessions of the classic Rolfing ten series and then with some small improvement in her overall flexibility, my client decided to take a break. Six weeks later Phyllis resumed Rolfing treatments with me; she had decided that of all the therapies that she had tried, Rolfing had produced the best results.

We continued for another 13 sessions during which time, my overall goal was to keep the whole body aligned and balanced in gravity while continuing to gradually break down fascial layers in the pelvis and legs, using Rolfing connective tissue manipulation until I could reach the deep adhesions surrounding the hip joint.

One of the major challenges to overcome when someone has been in pain for a long time is habitual muscle tightening around the damaged joint. This is caused by the nervous system’s fight or flight response and I have found that a combination of MET (muscle energy techniques), Neuromodulation therapy and gentle Rolf Movement is very effective in calming this automatic response. The result was that Phyllis began to experience significantly less pain and a more normal range of movement of the femur in the hip joint.

Having made steady progress during this second series, the rate of improvement again reached a plateau.  At this point, it seemed sensible to take another break.

We resumed work in early 2015, and over the first few months of the year made several significant breakthroughs, with marked improvement in Phyllis’ range of movement and further reduction of pain levels.

This has been a very interesting and enlightening experience for me as a practitioner.  It has shown, as Ida Rolf demonstrated, that although for most, the classic ten hours of Rolfing can bring remarkable changes to alignment, range of movement and mental/emotional outlook, for clients with more complex issues, the method can still be effective but more time is needed.

Admittedly, this has been an exceptionally long treatment period taking perhaps 30 hours to achieve the desired results. Weighed against this however my client now has a better posture, is out of pain and has achieved her goal which was to avoid hip surgery.

I am enormously grateful to my client for her faith in both Rolfing and me, for her persistence and for her generous financial commitment to the process.

We are now working patiently with an arthritic shoulder, and with only occasional work on her hips, they remain pain-free and mobile.

About Me

Kate gained her qualification as a Rolfing® SI practitioner from the British Academy of Rolfing Structural Integration (BARSI) in London.

A curiosity about peak athletic performance led Kate to Rolfing® SI. Whilst completing her MSc in Dance Science at Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, Kate was attracted to an intervention that had a goal of increasing whole body functionality and allowedher to essentially heal and manageher own injuries by becoming more body aware.

Grateful for herlearning through BARSI, Kate looks forward to sharing the Rolfing work at a time where Rolfing still remains a bit of a mystery to most people, yet is slowly manifesting into the go to for those realising healing through medication and short term fixes may not allow them to be sustainably comfortable in their body unless their whole body system andpatterns of moving are more understood.

Rolfing is put to the test by the Good Housekeeping Health team and is ‘Treatment of the Month’.  Good Housekeeping’s tester went to see Lucasz Gregorezyz at his St Alban’s practice (see his website at www.rolfing-london.com).  Although the tester was suffering from jaw pain, one session of Rolfing with Lucasz highlighted that her whole alignment and rest of her body were connected to the holding of tension in her body.
